The Art of Chief Oloruntoba
Born in 1919, Chief Oloruntoba is the heir to the throne of Ogibi, Nigeria. His art translates the powerful, clairvoyant dreams he has had since age 12 into stunning works.
Working with traditional methods, the Chief used hand-dyed cords and fibers. Notably, the vegetable dyes he used are not merely colours—they are medicines made from traditional roots and herbs that give the tapestries their therapeutic powers.
The exuberant images—featuring elephants, lions, great birds, Yoruba women, and village huts—are what the Chief called “paintings for power and life and for the protection from sickness and jealousy.” Each piece contains a healing spirit that grapples with a specific concern, offering curative properties far beyond the delight they give the viewer.
See them before they are gone forever. Visit Vicinanza Studios & Gallery today to experience the curative energy of these masterful Nigerian tapestries and make a lasting purchase!
