For months, Vicinanza Studios & Gallery has been honored to house the vibrant, spirit-led works of Chief Zacheus Olowonubi Oloruntoba. As our exhibit comes to a close, we invite you to one final reception to celebrate these masterpieces before they leave our walls forever.
Our goal for this evening is simple: To find a permanent home for every remaining tapestry. These are not merely decorative pieces; they are cultural treasures, and this is your final opportunity to acquire a work of "curative art" for your own collection or home.
About the Artist: Chieftain, Healer, and Dreamer
Chief Oloruntoba (1919–2005) was a Yoruba chieftain and heir to the throne of Ogibi, Nigeria. His journey into art began at age 15 as a way to interpret the powerful, lucid dreams he had experienced since childhood. While he eventually became a renowned herbal doctor and traditional healer, his art remained a central pillar of his practice.
The Art of Healing
The tapestries are created using a unique method taught to the Chief by his mother and grandmother. Each piece features hand-dyed cords colored with vegetable dyes derived from the same medicinal roots and herbs used in his healing practice.
Curative Powers: The Chief believed these works were "paintings for power and life," designed to protect the viewer from sickness and jealousy.
Symbolism: Look closely at the exuberant depictions of elephants, lions, Yoruba women, and tribal musicians—each contains a "healing spirit" intended to resolve specific concerns, such as Good Luck and Harmony or Protection.
Why Attend?
Whether you are a seasoned collector of African art or someone who appreciates the intersection of spirituality and craft, this reception is your last chance to experience these works in Southbury.
The Final Sale: All remaining tapestries will be available for purchase. Our mission is to see these works move from the gallery into the homes of those who will cherish their history and energy.
Last Viewing: Even if you are not looking to buy, we welcome you to join us for a final moment of appreciation. To stand before a Chief Oloruntoba tapestry is to witness a lifetime of dreams and tradition woven into fiber.
Join us for light refreshments, a final walk-through of the exhibit, and the chance to take a piece of Nigerian history home with you.
